Inflammation-Of-ColonInflammation of the colon or the colitis results from prolonged irritation and swelling of the delicate membranes of the colon walls. Ulcerative colitis is the formation of ulcers formed on the walls of the colon.
Colitis usually begins in the lower part of the colon and moves upwards. The first symptoms of the colitis is the urgency in moving the bowels, followed by cramping pains in the abdomen and sometimes bloody mucus in the stool. With the spread of the disease the stool become watery and more frequent. The loss of blood and fluid results in weakness, fever, nausea, vomiting, anemia and loss of appetite. Other symptoms include constipation alternating with diarrhea and insomnia.Colitis is generally caused due to chronic constipation and use of purgatives to treat it. Other causes of the disease are an allergy to a food, sever stress or antibiotics.
Bananas are an excellent remedy for colitis. Take one to two ripe bananas every day for treating ulcerative colitis. Bananas are bland, smooth and easily digestible with laxative properties and thus aid in reliving the acute symptoms and promoting the healing process.A glass of butter milk can also be taken daily to relieve colitis. Buttermilk is the residue that is left when the fat has been removed from the curd by the process of churning.
Tender coconut water can also be drunk to reduce the aggravation of colitis. It is soothing in nature to the mucosa of the colon.Steamed apples also aid in healing the colitis lesions due to their bring rich in iron and phosphorus.Drumsticks are also useful in colitis. A teaspoon of fresh leaf juice mixed with an equal quantity of honey along with glass of coconut water can be given as an herbal medicine two to three times a day.Rice has very low fiber content and hence is soothing for colitis. A thick gruel of rice prepared with a glass of buttermilk and a ripe banana should be given twice a day. This gruel is very nutritious and is well-balanced.The juice of wheat grass can be used as an enema. This will help in detoxifying the colon walls. Wheat grass can be easily grown at home.
It is important that the patient goes on a juice fast for five to six days for curing ulcerative colitis. Papaya juice, raw cabbage juice and carrot juice all are beneficial for treating colitis. Citrus juices must be avoided.Once the juice fast is over, the patient should gradually start eating small meals made of steam cooked vegetables or soft foods. Rice, porridge, banana, papaya, yoghurt and cottage cheese prepared at home) can slowly be included after the juice fasting. Sprouted seeds and grain, wholegrain foods, and raw vegetables should be added slowly to the diet. It is important that the food is eaten slowly and chewed properly.It is advised that white sugar, white bread, white flour products, spicy foods, tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages should be avoided.
